I think David meant to renew a humble spirit . I haven't read about renewing a steadfast spirit, so humble spirit seems more correct, in my so very humble opinion. King James Psalm 51: 9-11 9Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 10Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. NIV Psalm 51:9-11 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. The Hebrew word, translated "right" in the KJV and "steadfast" in the NIV, is Kuwn (Strong's #03559) and means: to be firm, be stable, be established (Niphal) to be set up, be established, be fixed 1a to be firmly established 1a to be established, be stable, be secure, be enduring 1a to be fixed, be securely determined to be directed aright, be fixed aright, be steadfast (moral sense) ... bible.crosswalk.com/Lexicons/Hebrew/heb.cgi?number=03559&version=kjvBlessings, Linda

Linda,
I went to my Strong's and this is what I have... I don't know if it means anything different..

H3559 koon A primitive root; properly to be erect (that is, stand perpendicular);. hence (causatively) to set up, in a great variety of applications, whether literal (establish, fix, prepare, apply), or figurative (appoint, render sure, proper or prosperous):—certain (-ty), confirm, direct, faithfulness, fashion, fasten, firm, be fitted, be fixed, frame, be meet, ordain, order, perfect, (make) preparation, prepare (self), provide, make provision, (be, make) ready, right, set (aright, fast, forth), be stable, (e-) stablish, stand, tarry, X very deed.

9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12 ...................... ,.............uphold me with thy free spirit. The word spirit is listed 100's of times in the KJ bible... and it alone can be a never ending study, eh? The angels are spoken of as being given spirits, to minister unto all mankind, through tests and trials. Can we be certain or not if David asked for renewing right spirit or not? God said that David was a man after His own ''heart''. Does the heart affect our spirit? It seemingly does, and when David sinned, he sinned in his heart, and realizing his sin, his spirit was broken, and was in bondage to this sin. If one would read the entire Psalm 51, we would see that David pleading with God to renew him in spirit, Davids spirit was tremendously broken, and when he cried out to God, that surely God would not despise a broken spirit. Somehow a broken spirit might imply a change in condition, to a condition of being useful again. [a wild horse is useful to its master, when its spirit is broken, and it obeys the commands of its master. Certainly David felt a need to obey Gods commands, and was renewing a purpose to be speadfast in his obedience, and a renew in David a right spirit. Verse 12 speaks of Gods free spirit. This is a good thought, too. God has a free spirit that seeks our fellowship, as free followers, and not under the bondage of sin. Sin cannot set us free, it bounds us , and is a cruel task-master, as we become slaves to its cruel appetite(s). Much more about these verses, but I am sure as long as people depend on doctrines of man, and not allowing the Comforter to guide our steps, we will continue to debate doctrines, interpretations, and be not understanding that we are born again of a spirit from God, and this individual spirit, is aided by the Comforter(Spirit) to understand all things, whatsoever Jesus Himself would have us to know. Thanks for sharing, Selah, and Joe. I lean towards David praying for a right spirit, because [due to his sin] I do not think that he considered himself steadfast in his near past, but as David said, he was broken spirit, and humbled to contrite obedience and not to the steadfastness that plagued him to do what David considered right in his own eyes, but to be broken, and changed, to what is right in Gods eyes. Yet at all costs, the renewing of David, would make David to wish for what God could give him, a justified spirit.
I really wish I hadn't entered into this debate about spirits. I think they are a good study, and being careful not to blaspheme the holy spirit.

12 ...................... ,.............uphold me with thy free spirit God said that David was a man after His own ''heart''. I looked up the NASB translation for the 12th verse, and it translates it: 'sustain me with a willing spirit.' how is it that King James is so much different than this NASB, and yet there were about 70 learned translaters involved with KJV tranlation, and they all agreed at that time, under the life and death order of accuracy that King James seemingly issued. How much corraboration was there in the NASB? It appears from the 15 major English translations, NASB, is the only one that interprets kuwn to mean steadfast, i believe 12 use 'right spirit' and one uses 'faithful spirit' .
